File#012: Gingko Tree

　　

　　1945年の東京大空襲で燃えたが、生き残った飛木稲荷神社にある銀杏の木。神木として祀らわれている。その時に焦げた跡が、現在でも生々しく幹に露出している。銀杏はもともと水分を多く含んでおり比較的、耐火性が強い木である。(墨田区　2013.09.22撮影)

　　

　Ginkgo tree, which was burnt heavily by the 1945's March 10 Tokyo Air Raid, but survived at Tobikiinari Shrine. The tree has been enshrined as a symbolic guardian diety. The burnt traces of charcoal are still exposed and visible on the trunk.  The ginkgo tree itself is relatively fire-resistant because it contains much water inside. File#011: Paper Lantern

　 江戸川区・旧中川で東京大空襲の犠牲者への慰霊と恒久平和の願いをこめて流された灯籠。東京大空襲で旧中川では約3000人が犠牲になったと推測されている。現在、この慰霊灯籠流しには多くの区議会議員とメディアが駆けつける。セレモニーは戦後54年経過した1999年から毎年8月15日に旧中川のふれあい橋で行われている。(江戸川区　2014.08.15撮影)

     Paper lanterns floated down Old-Nakagawa River at night to commemorate the victims of the Tokyo Air Raid firebombing and to pray for peace. An estimated 3,000 people perished in the river on March 10, 1945. Today, the ceremony attracts many ward assemblymen and media. It has been held on August 15th at Fureai Bridge, Old-Nakagawa River every year since 1999, which was 54 years after the war ended.  (Edogawa Ward, Tokyo. 2014.08.15)

File#010: Kamakura Bridge

   

　1944年11月の夜に行なわれたB29からの機銃掃射の弾痕が残る千代田区・鎌倉橋の欄干。その夜からB29爆撃機による本土市街地空襲が本格的に始まった。大小30個ほどの銃弾の後が今でも確認できる。犠牲者の情報は不明である。(千代田区 2014.03.17撮影)

     Traces of B-29 bomber machine-gun fire in the night of November, 1944 on the handrail of Kamakura Bridge in central Tokyo. It was the beginning of strategic air bombings on the Japanese mainland by B29s. It bears about 30 various sizes of bullet impacts that are still visible. No information on casualities is available. (Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. 2014.03.17)

File#009: Utility Pole

     台東区・三筋町の焼け焦げた電柱の複製。1945年3月10日の東京大空襲の後、辛うじてこのあたりで残っていたのがこの電柱だけであった。生き残った近所の人たちがその体験を忘れないために電柱をそのまま残す事に決めた。後になって本物の電柱は展示と保存のために江戸東京博物館で保管される事になったのだが、戦争の悲劇を次世代へ伝えるために全く同じものをセラミックスで複製し残している。(台東区　2014.02.24撮影)

　　Replica of a burnt utility pole at Misujicho, Taito Ward. After the March 10 Tokyo Air Raid, only this burnt pole stood in the area. So a neighbor survived the Air Raid decided to keep it standing, so as not to forget their war experiences. Although the real burnt pole was later moved to the Edo-Tokyo museum for display and storage, the neighborhood created an exact replica of the pole, made from ceramics, to remind the next generation of the sorrow of the war. （Taito Ward, Tokyo. 2014.02.24)
